Steve Jobs
My goal is first to give you a lens that will help to magnify everything else that will come through it. Writing is that lens.
It is the very act of writing and organizing your thoughts that is the gift. It is the very process of action, touching reality, writing, rewriting, reading, speaking out loud, listening, sharing with others that will help you most in life.
Touching reality and writing and reflecting on what you learned will allow you to shape your inner world. It will allow you to reframe and resolve problems. It will allow you to make less mistakes. It will help you to capture great ideas, create plans, weigh options and increase the likelihood of getting a positive outcome. It will teach you to know yourself and better understand the world around you. It will allow you to change and control your inner states. It will free you from being a slave to your own impulses. It will help you to build a relationship with yourself. It will help you to integrate the different parts of your brain that may be contradicting themselves. It will help you make sense of the world around you and allow you to start guiding your life with intention.
Steve later eluded the computer was the bicycle for the mind. I interpret writing as the bicycle, math as the jet engine and the computer and AI as the rocketship.
Will the best runner in the world beat a person that uses a bicycle? Never. Yet near every ULTRA successful person uses these (writing, logic, critical thinking, repetition, modeling reality, applied mathematics) on a daily basis. Are you?
It's rather simple! One of the single best pieces of advice I can give you is to carry with you an easily accessible, non-destructible document you can write, sort and shape ideas in.
If you get a good idea, write it down. If you get inspiration jot it down. If your having a dilemma write it down. Brainstorm a solution. Whatever is useful that you hear write it down and start to put it in context. It will help you to build a world view and a better understanding of yourself. It will help you to connect these different ideas. It will make your BULLSHIT meter better.
It will allow you to be the programmer of your mind as opposed to leaving it to leaving it to chance and fate.
It is the canvas for you to write and rewrite your own programming and understanding of this world.
It's not rocket science either. You take notes to learn. If not you will forget. The mind was designed to forget. The brain is constantly forgetting. If you don't use something you lose it - the brain evolved to be efficient.
If you look at the whole concept of psychotherapy - it is in essence an exercise in learning how to change your perspective. You create new neural pathways, while letting old ones die from atrophy. The key is to use evidence (the truth) to challenge autonomous thoughts and beliefs that are ingrained into you. You replace them with new frameworks that are practical and empowering. When you have the correct perspective you feel different, you can take the correct action. When you take the correct action your life experience will improve.
When you look at the most successful companies such as Amazon and Tesla and study why they are successful it is because the founders were able to orient and calibrate themselves to the changing reality around them and capitalize on circumstances by appropriately using energy and resources. They made key strategic decisions on how to use their resources. There were thousands of other companies that were much better capitalized and much better positioned initially to take advantage of the boom in technology and the internet. Yet Amazon and Tesla DOMINATED their respective fields over time.
Your life is akin to this. Applying critical thinking, using data, feedback and evidence to construct an understanding of the real world then making key strategic decisions based on this real world understanding can dramatically change the course and quality of your life. Making a couple of key decisions in sequence can shift your destiny.
You don't have to overthink it. In a recent interview with Lex Friedman Jeff Bezos talks about the distinction between different types of decisions: One way and two way decisions.
Two Way Decisions: There are those decisions that you can easily walk back and simply change your mind on.
One Way Decisions: These are decisions that if you decided to take back can cost you a significant amount of resources and energy.
It is key to understand the difference. In life that decision may be whether you choose to have kids, who you marry, if you have a big weeding or use that money as a down payment, if you decided to start a business for yourself or what field you go into. These decision will have a bigger impact and will be difficult to walk back so they should require thought and deliberation.
Below is a framework with 3 key sections:

Take what you find useful on this site and in life and integrate it into your written world-view. If you don't you will likely suffer and be a slave to your nature rather then learning to guide it.
Do you want to meaningfully improve the quality of your life?
